Report: Hull City U23s 1 Leeds Utd U23s 3
Hull City Under-23s made a disappointing return from the Christmas break when they were beaten 3-1 by Leeds United at the Roy West Centre on Monday night.
Jon Beale’s side included Max Sheaf and Keane Lewis-Potter who both featured as second half substitutes in the FA Cup defeat at Millwall as well as Brandon Fleming and Lewis Ritson who were unused substitutes at The Den. Those four players, together with Josh Thacker were the only ones to remain from the Under 23s last game before Christmas, a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.
Harrison Foulkes, Josh Hesson, Ahmed Salam, Jordan Hickey, Tom Powell and Billy Chadwick all came into the starting line-up replacing George Long, Robbie McKenzie, Jacob Greaves, James Weir, Chris Martin and Nouha Dicko. The Leeds side included former Tiger Liam Cooper who was making a return from injury.
There was a strong wind blowing down Inglemire Lane which made playing conditions difficult for both sides. Lewis-Potter couldn’t get an early header on target and it was the visitors who grabbed a 14th minute lead. Tom Pearce swung a free kick in from the right and Hugo Diaz somehow managed to hit the crossbar from point blank range but Kun Mihaylov bundled in the rebound from just a couple of yards.
The Tigers were level just a couple of minutes later and just like Leeds’ opener it came from a free kick out on the right swung in by the left back. Fleming’s high ball into the box was held up by the wind which caught out the Leeds back line and Ritson got the faintest of touches to nod the ball past Will Huffer.
Chadwick saw a shot from outside the box easily held by Huffer and a fine run from Lewis-Potter ended with a low shot just the wrong side of the post.
Leeds regained the lead in the 28th minute when Ryan Edmondson’s pass released Robbie Gotts to fire a right foot shot low past Foulkes.
Mihaylov and Gotts both fired wide early in the second period for Leeds. Pearce fired a free kick inches wide of the post after Thacker was harshly penalised for what appeared to be a good challenge. Edmondson was then sent clear and although his shot beat the advancing Foulkes it rolled wide of the post.
The Tigers struggled to create any real chances in the second period but they remained in the game until the 72nd minute when Leeds increased their lead. Gotts cross from the right was met by Mihaylov who headed past Foulkes.
It could have got worse for the home side in added time but Edmondson somehow ballooned the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
