Report: Hull City U23s 2 Huddersfield Town U19s 0

Hull City U23s won the inaugural Tigers Cup with a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town U19s on Saturday.

First half goals from Ahmed Salam and Tyler Hamilton were enough to seal victory for Jon Beale’s side in the pre-season tournament on home soil at Bishop Burton.

The Tigers started in positive fashion with Billy Chadwick firing narrowly wide after a flowing team move involving Will Mannion, Quinn Thompson and Hamilton.

Beale's youngsters were rewarded for their bright opening on 18 minutes when Salam cut from the left wing and find the back of the net with a fine strike from distance, despite Terriers goalkeeper Jacob Chapman getting a hand to it.

Less than five minutes later, the Tigers doubled their lead as a cross-field pass picked Hamilton, who slotted his effort under Chapman to score.

At the other end, Huddersfield tried to respond with Scott High’s drive beaten away by Mannion, while Darnell Mintus fired over following a great free-kick delivery.

The Terriers then saw penalty appeals waved away by the referee after they claimed Kai Herbert had been fouled by Mannion as the Tigers' custodian dived at his feet ti push the ball away.

Quick thinking from Salam carved out the first opening of the second half as his throw-in found Chadwick, who in turn picked out Jay Rouse. However, the midfielder’s shot was tipped over the bar by Chapman.

Then two of the three City trialists joined up well with one of them firing a shot which deflected wide off Josh Austerfield.

The Tigers continued to search for more goals as Chadwick latched on to Matty Jacob’s long ball, only to send his chipped effort wide of the target before one of the trailists in black and amber rounded Chapman only to see his shot blocked on the line by Mustapha Olagunju.

The Huddersfield defender then had his own effort cleared off the line by Danny Lupano after he met High’s corner. The final chance of the game came in stoppage time as Chadwick, failed to convert from close-range when sliding in to meet a low cross. It mattered not though as the Tigers saw the game out to lift the trophy.
